The cello (violoncello) is the tenor and bass instrument of the violin family (violin, viola, cello). In the 19th century the cello advanced along with the violin to become the most important bowed instrument for solo works. In the 20th century cellists began to specialize more, concentrating more on solo, chamber or orchestral playing. It is constructed using the same components as the violin, the only difference being the larger size. The bow is about 2 cm shorter and a quarter as heavy again as the violin bow. Horsehair is stretched between the two ends of the bow, with rosin ensuring that the bow remains in contact with the string.

It is constructed using the same components as the violin, the only difference being the larger size. Its stately and dark timbre contrasts sharply with that of the violin and makes the viola perfectly suited as the violin family’s middle voice. Its bow is a little heavier than the violin bow and the horsehair a little broader. The characteristic sound of the viola is a result of the following factors: The viola is tuned to a fifth lower than the violin (C3 = 4th string, G3 = 3rd string, D4 = 2nd string, A4 = 1st string). This means that the frequencies of the two instruments are in a ratio of 2:3. If this ratio were applied to the actual size of the instruments the viola’s body would have to be 12 cm longer (i.e. around 54 cm) than it actually is (around 42 cm).

The Alto Flute instrument from the Woodwinds Section of the Vienna Symphonic Library (VSL) in Kontakt (.nki) format.. The Alto Flute in G is a transposing instrument which extends the flutes’ lower tone range. There are two types: the straight shape and that with a curved headpiece. A straight-headed model was used for the recordings. The alto flute has a full, warm sound suggesting mystery especially in the lower range.

The classical Swing big-band ensemble includes 5 saxophones: 2 Alto, 2 Tenor and 1 Baritone saxophone. The transposing Tenor saxophone in Bb covers the middle range. Its sound can be very raw and “dirty”. Stan Getz is one of a large number of well-known players of this instrument. The musician for all the instruments, Robert Bernhard, plays in illustrious circles. His experience in orchestral music is as profound as his improvisations in jazz, funk and blues. He has captured all the nuances of the Selmer Mark VI series instruments (reissues of the famous vintage saxes of the Sixties) – from sensitive to aggressive, from whispering to screaming, exploiting the full dynamic range of these instruments.

The Soprano saxophone normally doesn’t show the typical curved build of the rest of the saxophone family but has a straight shape. It sounds very lyrical and has become famous through players like Kenny G. It is equally suitable for orchestral settings and jazz music.

In other words, the viola is too small in proportion to its tuning and this is the reason for its distinctive timbre. The ratio of the natural resonance of the body to the tuning is different on the two instruments: on the violin the natural resonance is about six half notes above the lowest note, on the viola eleven half notes.

Though this Cakewalk software collection is a reissue of Proteus sample content, it's not just a rehash of the same old libraries. Founder Timothy Swartz who produced the original sound sets for use in E-MU Systems' hardware products has now updated them for optimal use with the advanced parameters of Cakewalk's Dimension without losing their original tunings. This means Dimension users will now have 3,500 immediately usable sounds, from pop rock instruments (Proteus 2000) to symphonic orchestra (Virtuoso 2000), urban (Mo'Phatt) to electronic (Xtreme Lead-1), world percussion (Planet Earth) to traditional acoustic drum kits (PX-7) at their disposal. And these aren't just any sounds. Many have been used in film and television scores, including the famous 'X-Files' whistle. The list of musicians who have included Proteus samples in their repertoire is a veritable who's who of Grammy Award winners: Peter Gabriel. Prince. Trent Reznor. Phil Collins. The Bee Gees. Janet Jackson.
