By default, Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat integrate with Internet Explorer and cause PDF files to open automatically in the browser.

This confirmation-less rendering of PDF files has enabled attackers to deliver Adobe Reader and Acrobat exploits via the internet automatically. The result is surreptitious malware that downloads to your computer.

Fortunately, there is an easy way to prevent Adobe Reader and Acrobat from automatically rendering PDF files in your browser. Make this one small tweak, and henceforth you'll be notified if a website tries to open a PDF in your browser.

How to Prevent Reader From Opening PDFs in IE

  1. Open Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat.

  2. Open the Edit > Preferences... menu from the menu bar or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + K to get there even quicker.

  3. From the left pane, select Internet.

  4. In the Web Browser Options, uncheck the box next to Display PDF in browser.

  5. Choose the OK button to save and exit the settings window.

Therefore, the Acrobat/Reader plug-in won't work with Edge. For more information, see Change in support for Acrobat and Reader plug-ins in modern web browsers. Use Internet Explorer 11 to open PDFs. To enable the Acrobat/Reader plug-in in Internet Explorer, see the steps in the previous section.

Adobe Pdf Reader Crashes Ie 11

You may find that you are presented with a PDF download option, which you can decline.

So far, we've updated 2 of 6 computers at the office to the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update. Now those 2 computers cannot open PDF files in the Internet Explorer 11 browser.

Adobe Reader opens PDFs just fine from the desktop (not using a browser).

The Adobe Reader DC Add-on is 'enabled' in Internet Explorer.

I have tried to re-install Adobe Reader, disable and then enable the add-on, and change various internet options (such as 'Enhanced Mode' on and off, and 'User software rendering instead of GPU rendering') but nothing seems to work, at least not permanently. It may fix the problem for a few minutes but then the PDFs will not open again. It is very inconsistent.

  • We are experiencing the exact same issues you are having where the only fix is to disable and enable the Adobe PDF Reader Add-On in the browser. We are using IE 11.
  • If a blank page opens when you click a link to a PDF in Internet Explorer 10 or Internet Explorer 11, you may have disabled Acrobat or Reader for this website. Microsoft introduced Enhanced Protected Mode (EPM) in Internet Explorer 10 and included it in Internet Explorer 11. EPM is enabled by default in Internet Explorer 11.
  • In this article, we'll cover how to download and install the Adobe Reader plugin on different browsers to help you access your PDF files from your browser. Note that most browsers include native PDF plugins for viewing PDFs, though these lack many of the features that come with a standalone PDF application.

Has anyone else experienced this problem and is there a fix? One of the computers that I upgraded was running Adobe Reader XI (rather than DC) and it also was not working in the same way. I since updated it to DC and still does not work, so I'm thinking it is an Internet Explorer issue.

It would be easier for our staff in the office not to switch to Chrome or some other PDF reader to open PDF files, so hope we can find a fix.

Thanks.
